Complaint Choirs

This fall in our doctoral seminar here at the University of Miami I led the class through the topic of community music.  One student, Craig Denison, introduced me to the complaint choirs of the world, and I was fascinated.  I was familiar with the protest songs in the United States (e.g., the Weavers of the 1940s, Pete Seeger, the Civil Rights and Vietnam war movements of the 1960s, Latvia’s Singing Revolution, etc. ), but I was unaware of emerging phenomenon.

Here’s a link to get you started: http://www.complaintschoir.org/.

Most of what Craig found on the topic is from newspapers, magazines, radio, and the internet.
